Such is the blind faith in England about our chances of lifting the cup, that we can be seen at bookies sites listed as second favorites behind Brazil.
Bet with your head
Remember Golden Rule #1
Bet with your head, not with your heart.
With a reasonably easy group, the chances of England's elimination at this point is low with high odds of around 9/2 reflecting that.
Second round exit comes in at around 5/2(3.5) which reflects the chance that England could face Germany at this stage.
Going out at the quarter finals is becoming a recent English habit so odds of 7/2(4.5) seem generous but reflect the difficulty in getting to this stage. Although, with an encounter with either Argentina or Holland at this stage likely, it is good bet.
Quarter-final exit
A semi-final exit is priced around 9/2(5.5) and if England make it to this stage they will probably face off against the mighty Brazilian's, so a £10 bet now will enable you to drink away your sorrows with £55 in you pocket.
7/1(8) Will see a nice return if England make it all the way to the final and lose, personaly no amount of money will be able to console me at this point but it may be worth a punt.
MY TOP TIP: England for a Quarter final exit, with recent history indicating we will at least get to this stage and the generous odds of 7/2.

The Golden Boot (or Shoe according to FIFA) award always provides an interesting sub plot to the World Cup finals. When considering who will be the Golden Shoe winner(s) it's worthwhile noting that not since 1962, when 6 players shared the title has anything less than 6 goals been good enough to win it, the highest total was 13 Goals achieved by Just Fontaine of France in the 1958 finals.
Out and out striker
So, we are looking for an out and out striker with some reasonably weak opposition in the group phases in a team that will go as far as possible. Here is a typical bookies list:
| Adriano, L 10/1 |
Kujt, D 40/1 |
Totti, F 66/1 |

MY TOP TIP : Ignoring the short priced Brazilian pair and Henry who has never reached the same level for country as he does for club, I will be going for an each way bet on Michael Owen at 16/1 whos recent fitness worries seem to be subsiding. He also has a good opportunity to get goals early on against weak sides Paraguay and Trinidad & Tobago to set him up for (hopefully) a long run in the tournament.
I also recommend an each way bet on Ruud Van Nistelroy, who is also listed at 16/1. Like Owen, he will have a good chance to get amongst the goals in the group phase whilst playing Ivory Coast in a Holland team that should at least make it to the Semi-Finals. |

MY TOP TIP: I believe that

think will finish second, so put your money on France to win the group, and Korea
to finish runners-up.

With Brazil clear favourites
even at this early stage odds of 11/4 (3.75) will give you a £37.50 return
on a £10 bet.
Spread
your horizons
It seems wise to spread our horizons and stretch ourselves
to find another likely winner.
England's odds of 8/1(9) are short due to the overwhelming
local support and as the tournament approaches expect that to become even more pronounced.
Personally, if England win the World Cup i'll be happy enough,
the bets I will be puting on will be to try and ease the pain if they don't win. So
here is the general overall betting:
| Brazil 11/4 |
Sweden 40/1 |
Paraguay 150/1 |
| Italy 7/1 |
Ukraine 50/1 |
Ghana 150/1 |
| Germany 8/1 |
Croatia 66/1 |
Tunisia 200/1 |
| Argentina 8/1 |
Serbia and Mont. 80/1 |
Angola 200/1 |
| England 8/1 |
Ivory Coast 80/1 |
South Korea 250/1 |
| Spain 11/1 |
Poland 100/1 |
Iran 250/1 |
| France 12/1 |
U.S.A 100/1 |
Togo 400/1 |
| Holland 12/1 |
Switzerland 100/1 |
Saudia Arabia 400/1 |
| Portugal 25/1 |
Australia 100/1 |
Costa Rica 500/1 |
| Czech Rep. 33/1 |
Ecuador 125/1 |
Trinidad & Tob. 1000/1 |
| Mexico 33/1 |
Japan 150/1 |
|
MY TOP TIP: Holland are up there with Spain and England as one of those teams that never live up to their full potential in world cups.
With possibly the hardest group to qualify from, Holland will need to maintain the standard they set in qualifying to win the group. At odds of 12/1 (13) they represent my top tip for overall winners. |

One way of making the most of low priced bets on small stakes is to link them together, this type of bet is called an accumulator and the principle is that the a string of bets are made with the winnings from each stage of the bet becoming the stake for the next
E.G..
Bet 1 comes in and returns £20, therefore the stake for Bet 2 is £20.
So, as you can see with a relatively small outlay - large returns can be made. The drawback is obvious though: picking one winner can at times be hard enough let alone a string of them, and if at any time you've picked a loser the whole bet is a loser.
To maximise the chances of winning on accumulator in situations like the world cup it's wise to pick related bets for example:
Bet 1: £10 stake = Brazil to win group and Croatia to come second 5/4
Bet 2: £22.50 stake = Brazil to win World Cup 11/4
Bet 3: £84.38 stake = Adriano to finish top scorer 10/1
total win = £928.16 |
