Manchester United went ahead with a 100th league goal from Ryan Giggs after Ronaldo's initial shot was pushed away by Derby's goalkeeper.
Not long after it became 2-0 when Carlos Tevez slotted home from a Ronaldo free-kick. Wes Brown then assisted Tevez to make it 3-0. The woodwork was found by Rooney and Giggs before Derby got a late goal from Howard, but Ronaldo's penalty at the end restored United's 3 goal cushion.
Derby have been terrible away from home this season and were lucky to score their first away league goal of the season and Howard's first as well.
United were held at bay early on by a well organized Derby who failed to create any clear cut chances. Rooney would have scored United's first if it wasn't for a fantastic tackle from Jay McEverley. Due to the lack of attacking options at Derby's disposal United began to control the midfield with Carrick in for Hargreaves who was injured in the warm-up.
But the first goal didn't come until late in the first half with a very good strike from Ryan Giggs who pounced on the rebound from Ronaldo’s strike. The game was made pretty much safe when Tevez added the second just before the break when Ronaldo's free-kick was not properly dealt with.
Derby kept fighting and caused Edwin van der Sar some trouble with efforts from Giles Barnes and Claude Davis.
A bold chip from Rooney hit the woodwork and Giggs also hit the woodwork with a volley from Wes Brown's cross before Tevez got his second for the day with a mighty strike.
Tyrone Mears crossed for Howard to grab derby's first away goal of the season. But, there was still one more goal to come, this time from Ronaldo who got his 14th of the season after being brought down in the area by Tyrone Mears. Ronaldo slotted home the spot kick to finish the game off.
