And with Torres and Alonso sidelined, Benitez is likely to start with second-choice keeper Charles Itandje in goal and may see Harry Kewell feature at some point in the game.
Cardiff have injury worries with Kevin McNaughton, Roger, Trevor Sinclair and Paul Parry all doubtful for the trip. On-loan Manchester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel is also ineligible.
But striker Robbie Fowler is set to feature as he returns to his old club with the Championship side trying to reach the quarter-finals by knocking out one of the favourites.
