Liverpool travel to Berkshire looking to turn the tide on an uneasy last few games in one of the all-Premiership ties of the Carling Cup third round. Although still unbeaten this season, the Reds have looked unimpressive of late and will hope to take advantage of Reading’s shaky start to the season.
Reading boss Steve Coppell has vowed to make up to eight changes for Liverpool’s visit, with Kalifa Cisse doubtful for the squad because of a knee injury and Ibrahima Sonko (knee) not yet ready for a comeback. Striker Leroy Lita set to start and James Henry is also available.
Bobby Convey, Ulises de la Cruz, Scott Golbourne, Shane Long, Andre Bikey, Emerse Fae and goalkeeper Adam Federici are all set to be in Coppell’s starting XI.
Despite criticism of Rafa Benitez’s rotation policy, he’s likely to include several squad players and reserve Captain Jack Hobbs in his squad. Winger Jermaine Pennant and midfielder Javier Mascherano picked up injuries during Saturday's 0-0 draw with Birmingham and will not be involved in the third-round clash at the Madejski Stadium. But French goalkeeper Charles Itandje and £5million Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva could start the match.
