Buoyed by their convincing win over Israel on Saturday, England go into the game with Russia looking for a victory which will take them top of the group. But Steve McClaren admits that he might be forced to change his team to combat a different system and a meaner defence.
He has no fresh injury worries for the game though, with Frank Lampard and Owen Hargreaves already ruled out through injury. The remaining 25 players in the squad trained without problems and Steven Gerrard has been declared fit despite his broken toe.
The only headaches for the England boss now are the ones around selection. With Peter Crouch available after being suspended, the question is if Crouch plays up front with Michael Owen or whether Emile Heskey keeps his place after impressing against Israel.
Russia travel to London on the back of a 3-0 win against Macedonia at the weekend and McClaren knows that Guus Hiddink has crafted a well-organised and powerful team during his time in charge.
Captain Andrei Arshavin said that his side will try to target Paul Robinson because they believe he is the weak link in the England team. Part of this will involve getting past the strong defence in front of him and moving forward together as much as possible, as the winning team on Wednesday will be in pole position for qualification.
