Sometimes football gets things right. On Tuesday I flicked on the radio to hear the Z-Cars and Everton theme tune.
I support Everton so I knew they were not playing. When it finished there followed a minute’s applause building to a roar to celebrate the life of Rhys Jones, a young Everton football fan. These were the scenes at Anfield before their European tie with Toulouse. This followed near identical events at Goodison Park on Saturday. For me, it was genuinely emotional to hear Liverpool fans show support for Rhys Jones, not that I was surprised at their response, I must add.
Rhys Jones was a young boy playing football in the street, minding his own business and not hurting anybody. He was tragically and apparently accidentally shot by person or persons as yet unknown.
I have heard comments in the press that say he played football in the streets every day and didn’t get into trouble and was a genuinely nice, young boy. That’s the sort of positive impact football and of course good parenting can have.
A lot of us pour scorn on the amount of money players earn, the diving and cheating etc but when tragic events such as this happen, it becomes clear what a unifying force football can be. I suspect for Rhys Jones he just loved football and didn’t worry about all the scandal and merry-go-round that goes with it. Maybe we should try and do the same.
