As UEFA prepare to deliver their final verdict on who will host the 2012 European Championships, former favourites Italy have stepped up their attempts to land the prestigious tournament.
With criticism targeted at the Italian authorities following recent stadium disturbances in the Champions League, there have been doubts that the Azzurri will be playing in Euro 2012 as hosts. In an effort to dispel any fears of problems at the event, Roman authorities have produced a pamphlet for potential visitors designed to allay any safety fears.
The guide, 'A Riot of Football', describes how the final will take place in Rome, in what is described as a carnival atmosphere. According to the booklet, when not hosting matches, the Stadio Olimpico will be turned into a giant open air concert venue and nightclub where 'Police will go clubbing with fans'.
Discount designer wear will be on sale in the stadium, meaning supporters can 'get the best clobber', while they experience 'heavy beats' over the venue's P.A. system. Italian Ultra groups will be invited to provide a firework display and later provide visiting fans with 'a traditional Roman welcome of a shower of coins and small gifts such as cigarette lighters and golf balls'.
In a final attempt to woo the UEFA delegation, the football authorities of the Italian peninsula promise visiting fans that supporter relations with police will be vastly improved and that they can expect Rome to be 'an arresting experience', where all visitors can explore 'the football, the culture, the food and the excellent medical facilities on offer'.
