Without even the slightest hint of irony, Neville, who currently earns £3m a year at Manchester Utd,(£3m!) publicly spoke this week of his concern that agents were taking ‘millions’ out of the game.
It is thought that the outburst is in no way connected to United’s long-standing policy, formulated by chief executive David Gill aaaaaaages ago, of not involving agents in contract negotiations with players, including recent deals involving Rio Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs and, erm, Gary Neville. Agents have hit back at Neville though. “It’s not fair that footballers are earning such huge amounts of money that we could be earning,” said one leading agent. “In an ideal world, football clubs would just pay agents what they want, and there’d be no moaning millionaire footballers with inflated opinions of their own self importance.”
Neville, who runs a soccer school in Malta and also serves as a tourism ambassador for the country, and writes a column for the Times, all of which he sorted out on his own without the help of any management go-betweens at all, was allegedly the ringleader of an idea to boycott an important England Euro 2004 qualifier in Turkey in support of team-mate Rio Ferdinand who had been issued with a ban for ‘forgetting’ a drugs test, proof that footballers need absolutely no help with stuff whatsoever.
“Also, I’d like to see him try and get £40,000 a week for his brother;” said the agent. “And I’d do a better job at right-back for England.”
